What Kathy Griffin did wasn’t funny, but it can be

Kathy Griffin isn’t the first person or otherworldly being to behead a politician in comedic pursuit. The shock rock band GWAR had been doing it for years. Now, in context, what Kathy Griffin did wasn’t funny, but it can be.

This interview circa 1990 with GWAR’s late lead singer Dave “Oderus Urungus” Brockie on the Joan Rivers Show explains why. Humans have a natural blood lust. The pervasive headlines of violence as a way to pursue political ends proves just that. In a way, the band is only fulfilling a consumer need.

Unfortunately for us, all we have to express that desire is Kathy Griffin. Most of the people in this interview are already dead.
